Springers sweep four games this week

COLD SPRING, Minn.The Cold Spring Springers won all four of their scheduled games this past week, defeating the Sauk Rapids Cyclones 6-0 on Wednesday, June 13; defeating Hampton 6-5 on Friday, June 15, topping Clear Lake 10-0 in seven innings on Saturday, June 16; and winning 13-2 in seven innings against Ultimate Sports on Sunday, June 17. Cold Spring raised its season record to 16-3 overall and 10-0 in the Lakewood League.

 

Zach Femrite had another dominating performance in leading the Springers to a 6-0 win over the Cyclones. Femrite pitched his second consecutive one-hitter, striking out 15, walking one and hitting one batter. Femrite has 31 strikeouts in his last two starts on the mound. Rod Schafer had a two-run single in the fourth inning to put the Springers up 3-0. Gary Kiess was 2-for-4 with a double and Ryan Lieser drove in two runs for the Springers.

 

Eric Decker had the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Cold Spring to a 6-5 win over Hampton. The Springers scored three runs in the last half of the ninth inning to erase a 5-3 deficit. Mike Burtzel, Darren Heying and Ben Griffin each had two hits, while Griffin had two RBI. Andy Bulson started on the mound and worked into the seventh inning. Zach Reif came on in relief and Rick Burtzel got the win, going the final two innings.

 

Zach Reif tossed a four-hit shutout, Darren Heying and Ben Griffin each had three hits and two RBI, and Steve Huls had three hits and an RBI in the win over Clear Lake. The Springers scored two runs in the second and three in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

 

The Springers had 14 hits in the win over Ultimate. Cold Spring already led 6-0 and then scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break the game open. Thirteen batters came to the plate in the sixth inning. Eric Decker and Ryan Lieser each had three hits, while Zach Femrite had an inside-the-park grand slam in the sixth inning. Rick Burtzel pitched six innings to get the win, scattering two runs on four hits, while striking out five, walking four and hitting three batters. Aaron Traut pitched the seventh inning.

 

The Springers are scheduled to travel to Raymond at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 20; play at Dassel-Cokato at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 22; host Litchfield at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 23; host Nimrod at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 23; and then travel to St. Joseph at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 24.
