Springers go 4-1 this week

COLD SPRING, Minn. – The Cold Spring Springers went 4-1 this past week, winning at Raymond 8-5 on Wednesday, June 20; losing at Dassel-Cokato 3-1 on Friday, June 22; sweeping a home doubleheader 13-6 against Litchfield and 18-3 against Nimrod on Saturday, June 23; and winning 2-1 at St. Joseph on Sunday, June 24. Cold Spring raised its season record to 20-4 overall and 12-0 in the Lakewood League.

 

Ryan Lieser, Steve Huls and Brian Skluzacek each had two hits to help lead the Springers to an 8-5 exhibition win over Raymond. Zach Femrite pitched five innings, scattering five hits and allowing one run. Zach Reif pitched the last four innings to earn the save.

 

The Springers were held to one run on six hits in a 3-1 loss at Dassel-Cokato. Cold Spring’s lone run was in the sixth inning on a single by Andy Bulson scoring Darren Heying. Bulson (3-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits.

 

Zach Femrite went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs and two RBI as the Springers defeated Litchfield 13-6 in Lakewood League action. Mike Burtzel and Rod Schafer each had three hits and two RBI. Pitcher Rick Burtzel (4-1) scattered six hits in a complete-game victory.

 

Aaron Traut (1-0) went six innings on the mound and Steve Huls, Ben Griffin and Rick Burtzel all had three hits as the Springers defeated Nimrod 18-3 in seven innings. Huls had four RBI, while Griffin and Burtzel each drove in three runs. Nimrod scored all three runs in the top of the first inning. The Springers had 18 hits, including six for extra bases.

 

Zach Femrite (9-0) pitched a complete game, while Ben Griffin and Gary Kiess had RBI doubles in a 2-1 Lakewood League win over St. Joseph. The key doubles by Griffin and Kiess in the top of the sixth inning scored Brad Olson, a pinch runner for Darren Heying, and Griffin to erase an early 1-0 lead for St. Joseph. The Saints only run came in the bottom of the second inning. Femrite struck out 10, while scattering five hits and three walks.

 

The Springers are scheduled to host Granite City at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in Lakewood League action, and then travel to the Spamtown MN Baseball Challenge in Austin on Friday-Sunday, June 29-July 1. The Springers are scheduled to play Jamestown, N.D. at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 29; Sparta, Wis. at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30; and the Rochester Royals, defending state champion, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30. The semifinals and championship are set for Sunday, July 1, in Austin.
